🪵 Firewood BTU by Species

Canadian Firewood Species — Heat Output

H Hardwood S Softwood
Species Type GJ/cord ↕ MMBtu/cord Relative heat Weight (kg/cord)

How to Read This Table

GJ/cord values are for air-dried wood at ~20% moisture (about 1 year seasoned). Green wood contains 25–40% more water weight and delivers 20–35% less heat. Softwoods light easily and are great for shoulder seasons; hardwoods burn longer and produce more coals — best for overnight burns. All values per standard bush cord (4×4×8 ft = 128 cubic feet).
